Macau visitor numbers rose 14.4% year-on-year in April to just over 2.6 million, or 75.8% of the same month's tally for the 2019 pre-pandemic trading year, according to information from the Macau Statistics Office.

But on a month-on-month basis, visitor totals for April 2024 dropped 4.4%, just over the 2.72 million registered in March. The latter month included the Easter holiday observed in Hong Kong, Macau's second-largest tourist attraction market after mainland China.

The sequential decline in visitor numbers in April comes despite the Qingming holiday period observed in mainland China from April 4 to April 6 this year.

According to data released earlier by the city's Game Inspection and Coordination Bureau, the city's total casino gaming revenue in April was only 18.55 billion MOPs ($2.31 billion), down 4.9% from the previous month.

During April, same-day visitors (about 1.35 million overall) and night visitors (1.25 million) showed segmental growth of 23.0% and 6.3%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

Overseas visitors, currently the city's main target market, accounted for 8.0% of the total in April, supplying 208,297 arrivals. Overseas components were up 91.9% year-on-year and accounted for 68.6% of the same month's figures in 2019.

37,493 Koreans, or 60.9 percent of April 2019, were the biggest overseas contributors. The second was the Philippines, with 35,851 arrivals, or 86.6 percent of April 2019.

Mainland China, a major supply market, saw volumes rise 25.3% year-on-year to 1.74 million in April. People travelling on Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) departure visas fell 3.0% to 793,351.

China's State Council added eight mainland cities this month to its list of places where people can apply for IVS departure visas to travel to Macau. The change will take effect from May 27.

Visitors to nine Pearl River Delta cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Taiwan region stood at 792,949, up 28.6% year-on-year.

Hong Kong arrivals (581,646) fell 22.0% year-on-year in April, while Taiwanese arrivals (734,460) rose 120.6%.

Visitors to mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan returned to 74.2%, 83.5% and 80.0% of those levels in the same month in 2019, respectively.
